"We shouldn't teach great books; we should teach a love of reading."

Washington ~ "Clancy"

dog heroes, australian shepherd

Clancy is fascinated by "Dog Heroes"

In 2007, Clancy (now 7 years old) will begin his fourth year at an elementary school in Oak Harbor, Washington. He loves to close his eyes and listen as a student reads to him, but he always pays attention and looks at pictures when they hold up the page for him to see.

Yes, I'm listening!

Clancy seems to enjoy all dog stories, books about construction equipment, and books about rocks, minerals, or outer space.

In his spare time Clancy likes to race through the yard with his sister dog, Molly. Clancy is a lucky pup that gets to burn off that famous Aussie energy doing agility, obedience, and canine freestyle. Then following a typical burst of speed, and using his Aussie intelligence, of course, he can be found taking a nap in one of several comfy dog beds around the house.

Meet Clancy, a lovely little Australian Shepherd. The Australian Shepherd (often called an “Aussie”) is typically an intelligent, active dog with an even disposition. Known to be good natured, seldom quarrelsome, they have an energetic nature and a great deal of stamina. This breed generally needs a good workout every day, preferably combining both physical and mental challenges, or it can become frustrated and difficult to live with; however, with proper exercise and training, the Aussie is a loyal, utterly devoted, and obedient companion.

Reading, then relaxing.

Some say that even though it is physically able to live outside in temperate climates, it is a breed for which human contact is so vital that it is emotionally unsuited for a life in the yard.

Clancy, just being himself, helps kids enjoy reading.

Aussies come in a variety of colors. Clancy’s red merle body once prompted someone to describe him as looking like a melted butterscotch sundae. It’s a perfect description, and the kids love to hear it. australian shepherd, playtime, reading time

Ahh, belly rub time!

Clancy has most of the students trained to gently rub his belly while they read to him. When they finish reading, they get to give him a vigorous belly rub.
