Ohio ~ Gator Reading Program

Reading certificates are given to children after completing a reading program with a therapy dog.

Children look forward to receiving a
special certificate officially pawtographed
by Gator.

Not one to be left far behind, Furby, a Papillon, also began going to school every day for some special reading time with the children.

Layla, a large German Shepherd, is a big help with the little kindergarten children. German Shepherds are another very popular breed. They have been in the public eye and media many times, recognizable from the TV series "Rin Tin Tin" as well as other canine characters.

Meet the outstanding dogs that have been listening to children read since 2004 at Locust Corner Elementary School, part of the New Richmond Exempted Village School District in New Richmond, Ohio:

Gator got the program started in 2004 with six children who each read to her 20 minutes a week. At that time, the children were in second grade but reading below grade level.

These children had previously had turned down free after-school tutoring but began staying after school just to read to Gator. By the time they had finished third grade, five of them were reading at or above grade level (the sixth was later identified as having a learning disability).

Two years llater, Betsy, an all-American mixture of several breeds, happily joined Gator and the youngsters at school.
