All-Around READing Dogs
Maine ~ "Kelvin" & "Cody"

This Chesapeake Bay Retriever therapy dog relaxes while listening to a beginning reader with a good book.

Cody looks happy about beaing a
R.E.A.D. team member.

Cody was adopted from Chesapeake Safe Harbor in June 2005, and he is trying hard to fill Kelvin's big pawprints. He has passed basic obedience and the AKC Canine Good Citizen test. He has been registered with Therapy Dogs, Inc., since March 2006 and has been a Reading Education Assistance Dog since June 2009.

In addition to volunteering in the Reader Dog Downeast sessions with many children, including some of Kelvin's former Reader Kids, he is part of Elderfolks Dog Downeast at Birch Bay Villege in Bar Harobr, Maine, where he visits the Assisted Living and Alzheimer's Residencts.

MJ and Cody participated in the
Flamingo Fesitval Parade
as part of the Library entrant

Like Kelvin, Cody is an active dog that likes swimming, hiking, walking, agility, mountain climbing, and car camping. He was one of the runners-up in the Maine Boats, Homes & Harbors Boat Show Boatyard Dog Trials in August 2007 and 2008. Like any young boy, he also likes eating and sleeping and collecting sticks!

Books about Chesapeake Bay Retrievers include:
Chessie The Sea Monster That Ate Annapolis, by by Jeffrey Holland and Marcy Dun Ramsey
Dara: Autobiography of a Chesapeake Bay Retriever, by Lolo Sarnoff
Life with Grover. A Chesapeake Bay Retriver who thought he was a person, by Alexander Crosby Brown

Kelvin is a 7-year-old Chesapeake Bay Retriever. Sometimes called a “Chessie,” this breed was developed to hunt waterfowl under adverse weather and water conditions, often having to break ice during many strenuous multiple retrieves. Its double coat consisting of a short, harsh, waivy outer coat and a dense, fine, wooly undercoat contains an abundance of natural oil and is ideal for protecting a Chesapeake in icy rugged conditions. Despite it’s size and hardiness and the fact that it loves an active life, including a daily romp or swim, the breed prefers more than anything to spend time with its family. Most Chesapeakes have a bright and happy disposition. They are valued for their intelligence, quiet good sense, and affectionate protective nature.

This therapy dog is a Chesapeake Bay Retriever.

Kelvin is an amazing R.E.A.D.® dog,
always ready to offer encouragement .

Kelvin relaxes while listing to a favorite book,
"I'll Teach My Dog 100 Words!"

Kelvin volunteers on Wednesday afternoons at the Southwest Harbor Public Library on Mt. Desert Island in Maine. The library’s program is called Reader Dog Downeast, and Kelvin began visiting the children there on Valentine’s Day 2004. He and his handler began with a Valentine’s Day pawtographed card event. They work with the children in one-on-one sessions, and have recently begun conducting writing workshops for 4th graders.

Sadly, after a very full life including activities such as mountain climbing, backpacking, boating, skijoring, camping, agility and boatyard dog trials in addition to his reading with children visits, Kelvin crossed over the Rainbow Bridge on March 18, 2009.
