All-Around READing Dogs
Iowa ~ "Lucy," "Luke," and "Annie"

Luke is an Alaskan Malamute therapy dog.

Luke is ready with his favorite book,
"Go, Dog. Go!"

Luke is an Alaskan Malamute, borh January 28, 2004, and later adopted from the Iowa City Animal Care and Adoption Center. Malamutes are one of the oldest Arctic sled dogs. They are powerful, heavy-boned, rather large dogs, with an affectionate, friendly disposition. When he's not visiting the children at Horace Mann Elementary School, Luke loves playing at the dog park and spending time with his family.

Books about Alaskan Malamutes and sled dogs include:

Balto and the Great Race, by Elizabeth Cody Kimmel
Born to Pull, by Bob Carey
Storm Run: The Story of the First Woman to Win the Iditarod Sled Dog Race, by Libby Riddles
The Bravest Dog Ever: The True Story of Balto, by Natalie Standiford
Togo, by Robert J. Blake

Annie is a golden retriever that helps children with their reading.

Annie also likes "Go, Dog. Go!" but
she might enjoy a different book today.

Annie is a Golden Retriever, born in February 2005 and later adopted from a rescue group in Minnesota called Retrieve A Golden. She has been a Delta Society Pet Partner since October 2006 and regularly listens to students at Kirkwood Elementary School, as well as the summer reading program at Iowa City Public Library. Golden Retrievers are known to be friendly, reliable, and trustworthy. Annie is a perfect example, as she gets along just fine in her country home with 3 horses, a llama, a goat, 3 dogs, and 11 cats!

Books about Golden Retrievers include:

One Golden Year: A Story of a Golden Retriever, by Colleen Hubbard
The Angel by My Side: The True Story of the Dog Who Saved a Man...and the Man Who Saved a Dog, by Mike Lingenfelter

Lucy is a Goldendoodle, shown here with a 4th grade reader at Lemme Elementary School. Lucy and other Pet Partner® teams visit several elementary schools in Iowa City and also volunteer in a summer program at Iowa City Public Library.

This child is reading to a goldendoodle, a cross between a golden retriever and a poodle.

Lucy loves this story,"The Digging-est Dog,"
and pays close attention.

The Goldendoodle (sometimes called a “Dood”) gets its name because of its mixed parentage of two purebred dogs, a Golden Retriever and a Poodle. Many people consider them terrific family dogs, friendly, intelligent, affectionate, and easy to train. They can inherit a coat that’s wavy like a retriever or curly like a Poodle, but it’s usually something in between. They are likely to shed little, if at all, due to the qualities of a Poodle’s fur, and thus are a popular choice for people with allergies.

Books with Golden Retrievers and Poodles include:
Can I Be Good? By Livingston Taylor & Ted Rand (illustrator)
Coco and Cavendish: Circus Dogs, by Judy Sierra and Paul Meisel
Fifty Acres and a Poodle, by Jeanne Marie Laskas
My Big Dog, By Janet Stevens (illustrator) & Susan Stevens Crummel
Riptide, by Frances Ward Weller
